For sale Pre-HE 1979 Jaguar XJS barn find restoration project. Registration DEF 431T. 49,600 miles V5 and service history.

Bought around 9 years ago with the intention of restoring it one day but sadly no longer a prospect of doing so.

Has been stored in a barn, used to run and move back and forth under its own power but now won’t start.

Original colour white, at some point re sprayed red. 5 GKN alloy wheels.

£7500 Spent on suspension and new streering rack air con and new fuel tank by Trevor Farrington Knutsford.

£2000 spent on respray few masks could do with another buff.

1975 built XJS Pre HE genuine MANUAL transmission.

This car was subject of a £30k re build in 1986 by the then owner a Mr Paul Jolly including Kearns Richards engine producing a bench tested 425bhp. Running on upgraded brakes and suspension and 16" TWR alloys. I have testimonials from Mr Jolly regarding the build and stories regarding its development including a heritage certificate from Jaguar.

Whilst the previous custodian submitted the car for MOT it failed even though it is exempt, a wise move. The relevant failures have been corrected. The car does need recommisioning but for several reasons I have decided to move her on as I can't really drive manuals anymore due to a foot problem and loosing my storage space.

Jaguar XJS Cabriolet project car

I bought this car and it looked absolutely amazing. The bloke had spent a fortune on the outside of the vehicle but me being me when I investigated the car it wasn’t as good underneath so I started the restoration. Jaguar supplied new boot, wings and door panels and shell is like brand new now.

Some interior fittings and more than enough spares to put it back together and make it look like great again.

I’ll just never get time to finish it and it be nice to pass it on and let someone else actually finish it and enjoy the beauty of this car.

Although the car has a v5 of cabriolet I know the VIN shows it was once one of the convertibles that was changed to a cabriolet by Jaguar. You can see the difference in the rear quarter light windows.

1988 XJS “Chasseur” 5.3ltr HE V12 Auto,

83,000 miles with FSH in Grenadier red with magnolia upholstery. MOT Oct 2025.

Reportedly 1 of just 2 Chasseur XJS 5.3Ltr conversions in existence.

Chasseur Conversion (Carried out approx. 1989-1990):

17” Wheels, Lowered suspension (Ride is 80mm from the road) new bumpers, (Porsche 911) wing mirrors, grillage, interior enhancements.

Further Improvements 1996-2003 -Sunroof, remapping of ignition, unleaded conversion, new fuel tank, embroidered carpets, head rest pillows, wooden steering wheel, stainless steel grill and stainless-steel exhaust.

History 23 service stamps till 2014, stored for 3 years then service history from then. I have owned from Dec 2017. Extensive history file with emails from past owners and receipts for works including photos. Recent works - Cavity Wax injection, underseal renewal, front suspension, new brake pads, Rear shock absorbers, new door seals & plenty more. Over £15K spent in my ownership. 1992 XJS Chasseur 310 4.0 Manual for sale

Possibly the only 6 cylinder one left (or the only 4.0 Completed) by Chasseur in 1992 - its the press car (or at least the one in the Magazine ads) - previously featured in XJS Club Magazine.

Chasseur upgrades include : Weber throttle bodies, head and ecu work to give approx 310HP, modified exhaust (not too loud but does pop on overrun), uprated suspension and big front AP brakes, short shift. quick rack, subtle bodykit. Rear 9 and Front 8 inch wide 17 inch Racing Dynamics wheels Continental tyres all round – rears less than 3000 miles, fronts probably 1000.

Otherwise its a well looked after and (almost) rust free XJS – ideally needs c £1500 cosmetic work to bring bodywork up to sscratch. Worst bits are OSR lower arch rusted but new panel being included and a rust hole on bonnet frame – both my chosen Bodywork people can’t now fit it in this year so selling as is (reduced price).

Prior to my ownership in 2022 the car was extensively recommissioned as it had been in a collection for a few years, there is an invoice for £4,100 for pre mot work in 2022, I understand the engine was also worked on at the time but I cant prove that although I may still have the number of the chap who did it. I have also had the gearbox mounting replaced and some electrical work done to get interior lights and windows working. The car has done just over 82,000 miles (see vosa History)- the odometer stopped working in July and I've fitted a replacement unit that needs resetting to the correct mileage – currently shows 160K!

I've done about 3,500 trouble free miles in it, MOT expires July 2024 (advisory free).

Most electrics work inc seats, windows, interior and boot lights. No battery drain when left for a month so starts first time after being left for a while. Headlining replaced prior to my ownership.

Faults, not many. Central locking sometimes only locks from passenger side (think that side's mechanism is a bit sticky), unlocks fine from both sides. No radio (not got round to fitting one partly due to engine and exhaust symphony!). low fuel light comes on and goes off with handbrake at moment! Electric mirrors have never worked (but they are not standard fit morrors), replaced switch but haven't looked further. Some stone chips and minor bodywork issues as noted above.

Had my fun, fallen back in love with my Stag now its behaving.

So, price? Its a bit of an enigma but always gets good comments especially when clean (sorry re a couple of photos, it gets used!). The last Chasseur XJ6s that sold at Auction went for c £20K (about 3 times what their standard counterparts were worth), I think thats not the case here but I think for its rarity and condition I'm looking at £12,750 as is now I’ve sourced the expensive wheels. Sorry no PXs (albeit I always say that!).

Car is kept garaged 5 miles from J12 M40 British Motor Museum - happy to meet there if sunny.

The engine hasn't run for 15 years, we have owned the car for 20 years, there is a full service history and mot's, last mot 20 years ago, no oil leaks, serviced by Appleyards of Bradford at the time. Used as a family car and to go to work in.

2 new wings fitted when purchased, the only rust issues were in the rear wheel arch areas. No holes anywhere other than the above mentioned, all the diff, and running gear removed, the main diff frame still original, just requires blasting and painting, last taken to Bridlington for a good run out, no problems with any power.

I have attached a photo of the interior as it was before I started stripping the car down. I fully appreciate that the car is a project for someone, the only welding that is required are both the inner and outer rear wheel arch panels on both sides of the car.

I do not want to sell it as separate items, it has history and needs a good home.

For Sale £2,000 Dream Project – XJS 4.0 Auto Sports

June 1994 XJS 4.0 Auto bought for 10th (tin) wedding anniversary for wife. After divorce bought back off her with the intention of restoring. Donor car 1977 5.3 XJS Auto.

Friend of family, starting own business, repaired removing and making good rusty areas - welding using a donor car and fabricating where needed. Due to family circumstances, he was unable to complete the project, and I do not have the skills to complete the project.

Work to Do (specified by mechanic):

Paint:

Final flat & prepare body, wings, bonnet, boot lid & bumpers.

Etch prime/seal old paint from new (or take whole vehicle to bare metal).

Paint – assuming ‘Clear over Base’ to match original paint colour/codes.

Reassemble.

Refurbish front seats.

Replace flex brake lines.

Replace brake discs, recondition or replace brake callipers as necessary.

Replace brake pads.

Check & repack/replace wheel bearings & seals as necessary.

Replace rear springs & dampers. (Already purchased)

Flush or replace radiator as necessary (including hoses as appropriate).

Drain, flush cooling system and refill as required.

Check A/C system & overhaul as necessary.

Check leak/weep from oil cooler & repair/replace components as necessary.

Undertake full mechanical filters and fluids service.

Check exhaust system for leaks repair/replace.

Replace road wheels & fit new tyres
