Front Spring Compressor



Slightly interesting story, before the question. Took the front springs out using the threaded rod method. All OK with a lot of patience (and HIGH TENSILE RODS). But, as old springs were saggy the new springs will (I guess) are going to take a lot more compression - see the difference in size! Messing about with springs under load is not my favourite task and I do not trust the rod method to go back. There are genuine Jaguar compressors, but anyone know where I can buy/borrow/hire/beg from? Thanks in advance...

If i were you id be contacting a local long standing Jaguar main dealers service department, and or service manager . my mechanic changed the front springs and shockers for new last year on my 81' car he knew our local main dealer personally, and having been Jaguar dealers since the 60's they had the correct Jaguar xj-s front spring compressor, which luckily for us we were able to "borrow" ,


you CANNOT buy the tool over the counter new Jaguar will only supply them to one of their dealers, AND the cost is several hundred pounds for one new, so trying to buy a Jaguar one is a non starter i looked into that one first .loan or hire is the way with this one .


I cannot stress ENOUGH the importance of using the correct Jaguar tool for this job these springs especially NEW ones are absolutely HUGH , powerful under load , and heavy units , using anything other than the correct jaguar spring compressor is very DANGEROUS indeed.

if one of those springs "let go" using a d.i.y. compressor method it could very easily KILL someone!

thats one job that needs doing with great care and again the correct Jaguar tool for the job.

you dont say where in you live however maybe not a main dealer but a specialest might hire you one i do know the JEC have a set for hire but you must be a member

it doesent matter where you are the tool itself is a Jaguar main dealer tool its several hundred pounds to buy and they wont sell one to Joe public either thats as far as i got by asking them myself .

its all down to wether or not a main dealer is prepared to lend out their factory supplied Spring compressor i was fortunate in that my mechanic had regular dealings with the local jag main dealer they knew him,so they lent him it without that id have been up the creek!, walking in cold off the street you dont get the same response from these dealers , regards

Well......the tool can be purchased (JD115) from SNG Barrett for £172 + VAT. And thats exactly what I did! While taking off saggy old springs using the threaded bolt method is sort of ok - I would certainly endorse the view that its **very risky** to use the same method to compress new springs. The tool maybe a bit pricey but its safe and makes the job a lot easier.

Hi Steve would you consider renting the compresser to members you charge a deposit of the purchase price plus shipping plus a rental charge and refund the deposit on return in good condition several members have asked me at shows if i know where i can rent one

Hi Steve, I am looking at the tool from SNG Barrett but do you think you can feed it in from the bottom with subframe still attached to the car i.e. is the pin narrow enough that you can jiggle the rod enough to get it up through the hole ?

BTW in your picture looks like the pin is nearly pulling through?

Hi. Yes, you can thread the rod through from the bottom. But I wouldn't do it that way for the exact reason you spotted. The lugs to stop the rod becoming a interesting projectile under several tons of spring loading - are really tiny. Teeny tiny!!. Whats not shown in the pics is me with hard hat, safety goggles (more for comfort than any real protection), and my wife poised to call an ambulance! Every turn was done by me at an absurd angle to keep a safe position should it let go. With the frame off you can check how the lugs are seated and the tool needed a lot of wiggling about to seat the lugs evenly before the springs pulled enough for them not to move. Spring #1 was a very unnerving experience, but more confidence in the tool made spring #2 a lot easier. I'm sure the guys who use this tool everyday must be laughing their socks off at my description here, but I was more than a bit alarmed at those teeny tiny lugs....

Whilst suggesting the frame off is perhaps better, I would say that getting the frame back on is a bit of a swine. While the IRS is a doddle, the front frame designer was certainly possessed by evil spirits. Consider the engine (supported of course) deciding to move forward just enough for it not to align with the frame on its way back on.. Apparently its a common problem and takes much heaving with levers to realign.

On the plus side....the XJS is back on the road, handles like a train on tracks and passed its MOT without a single advisory (smug grin here!)

Thanks for the swift reply and pleased to hear your XJS is back on the road. I am going to make the tool with a pin plus add washers and bolts on top to ensure it cannot slip through under load! I too will be wearing a hard hat though!

SNG Barratt say that the tool they sell that supersedes Jd115 is part no. 204-111.

which is specified for the x300/xj8. I have not yet been able to get any confirmation from them that it will work on the XJS. Has anyone ordered this part recently and able to confirm if this is the case?

Just to update. I bought the tool from SNG Barratt in France for just over £200. It worked perfectly on the XJS. With springs successfully replaced I immediately put it up on Ebay and a guy in Czechoslovakia bought it for £25 more than I paid so all in all a success.
